Ford Truck Windshield Repairs

Repairs on Ford F150s to F450 are generally easier than replacing the entire windshield. Repairs just require a specific resin to fill in the damaged area, and the type of resin depends on the type of break. A chip typically needs a more liquid-like resin, and a crack requires a more viscous resin in order to seal the damaged edges together. The resin acts like a clot to fill in the empty spaces but also strengthens the damaged area by bonding the broken edges together.

If the crack is over six inches in length, or the glass contains a pit, the windshield will need to be replaced. The Ford F150, F250, and F350 generally have the same windshields for matching years, so it may not be as difficult to order parts. These three models also have a large plastic trim at the front of the windshield that connects to the hood. This is called a cowl. To do the replacement, the cowl, rear view mirror, and windshield wipers need to be removed first. Then the glass can be carefully removed with suction cups. The pinch weld will need to be cleaned and then the urethane bonding agent can be applied. Following the application, then the new windshield can be fitted back onto the truck.
